Privacy Policy

We attach great importance to data protection. The collection and processing of your personal data is carried out in compliance with applicable data protection regulations, in particular the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). We collect and process your personal data in order to be able to offer you this website and potentially other services in connection with it. This privacy policy describes how and for what purposes your data is collected and used, how and where it is stored and what options you have in connection with your personal data.

I. Scope

This privacy policy applies to the website of the German Society of International Law (www.dgfir.de). It does not apply to the collection, storage and utilization of personal data in connection with the membership in the German Society of International Law (for the purposes of member administration and support, transmission of communications to members). In this regard, we refer to the dedicated privacy policy.

III. Data collection and processing

When you visit the website of the German Society of International Law (DGIR), we only collect, store and process personal data to the extent you have consented to and to provide a functional and secure website. We also collect, store and process personal data to the extent you consciously provide it to us by contacting us, e.g. to respond to an enquiry. In general terms, the data collected is meta and communication data, usage data and personal data that is communicated to us in the course of direct communication (e.g. subject of the enquiry, attachments).

III.1. Log files

The provider of this website automatically collects and stores information your browser automatically transmits to us in so-called log files. This concerns in particular information on the browser, operating system, and screen you are using, your IP address, the URL from which you came onto the website, the pages you visited and the date and time stamp of your visit.

We use this data to ensure the functionality of the website, in particular to detect and eliminate website errors, to analyse the utilization of the website, and to make adjustments or improvements. This data is collected on the basis of Art. 6 para. 1 s. 1 lit. f GDPR. The website operator has a legitimate interest in the technically error-free presentation and optimisation of its website - the server log files must be recorded for this purpose.

III.2. Cookies

Our website uses cookies. Cookies are small text files that are stored on your device either temporarily for the duration of a session (session cookies) or permanently (permanent cookies). Session cookies are automatically deleted at the end of your visit. Permanent cookies remain stored on your end device until you delete them yourself or they are automatically deleted by your web browser. Cookies have various functions. Many cookies are technically necessary, as certain website functions would not work without them (e.g. language selection on multilingual websites or opt-out cookies). Other cookies are used to evaluate user behaviour. An overview of the cookies used by our provider Wix on this website, their respective purpose and storage duration, can be found here: https://support.wix.com/en/article/cookies-and-your-wix-site

Necessary cookies, i.e. those required to carry out the communication process, to provide certain functions or to display the website, are stored and processed on the basis of Art. 6 para. 1 s. 1 lit. f GDPR, unless another legal basis is specified. We have a legitimate interest in the storage and processing of necessary cookies for the functionality and technically error-free provision of our services. For other cookies, including so-called third-party cookies, we require your consent. If consent to the storage of cookies and comparable recognition technologies has been obtained, the processing is additionally carried out on the basis of this consent (Art. 6 para. 1 s.1 lit. a GDPR and § 25 para. 1 TTDSG); the consent can be revoked at any time.

III.3. Individual enquiries

If you contact us by mail, e-mail or telephone your enquiry including all personal data will be stored and processed by us for the purpose of processing your request. We will not pass on this data without your consent. This data is processed on the basis of Art. 6 para. 1 s. 1 lit. b GDPR if your enquiry is related to the fulfilment of a contract or is necessary for the implementation of pre-contractual measures. In all other cases, the processing is based on our legitimate interest in the effective processing of the enquiries addressed to us (Art. 6 para. 1 s. 1 lit. f GDPR) or on your consent (Art. 6 para. 1 s. 1 lit. a GDPR); consent can be revoked at any time.

The data you send to us via contact requests will remain with us until you ask us to delete it, revoke your consent to storage or the purpose for data storage no longer applies (e.g. after your request has been processed). Mandatory statutory provisions - in particular statutory retention periods - remain unaffected.

IV. Analytics and hosting by third-party providers

We host our website with Wix.com Ltd, 40 Namal Tel Aviv St., Tel Aviv 6350671, Israel (hereinafter ‘WIX’). WIX is a tool for creating and hosting websites. When you visit our website, WIX is used to analyse user behaviour, visitor sources, the region of website visitors and visitor numbers. WIX stores cookies on your browser that are required to display the website and to ensure security (necessary cookies). For details, please refer to the WIX privacy policy: https://www.wix.com/about/privacy

We have concluded a data processing agreement within the meaning of Art. 28 GDPR with WIX, that is a contract in which WIX commits itself to process data only upon our instructions, legal obligations and official requests and in conformity with the GDPR. In the contract, WIX further undertakes to ensure confidentiality, take technical and organisational measures to ensure security of processing and to only engage the sub-processors specified in the agreement who themselves provided sufficient guarantees that their processing of user data respects the GDPR.

The data collected by WIX may be stored on various servers worldwide. The servers are located in the USA, among other places. WIX is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework with respect to which the European Commission has concluded in Implementing Decision EU 2023/1795 that the US ensures an adequate level of protection for personal data transferred from the EU to US companies under the framework.  According to WIX, where an adequacy decision within the meaning of Art. 45 GDPR has not been taken, data transfer to third countries is based on the standard contractual clauses of the EU Commission or comparable guarantees in accordance with Art. 46 GDPR. The full data processing agreement can be found here: https://www.wix.com/about/privacy-dpa-users

The use of WIX is based on Art. 6 para. 1 lit. f GDPR. We have a legitimate interest in displaying our website as reliably as possible. If a corresponding consent has been requested, the processing is carried out additionally on the basis of Art. 6 para. 1 lit. a GDPR and § 25 para. 1 TTDSG, insofar as the consent includes the storage of cookies or access to information in the user's terminal device (e.g. device fingerprinting) within the meaning of the TTDSG. Consent can be revoked at any time.

V. Your rights

When your personal data is processed, you have the following rights:

  • Right of access, in particular to information about the stored personal data, the purpose of its processing and the storage period (Article 15 GDPR).

  • Right to rectification if data concerning your person is incorrect or incomplete (Article 16 GDPR).

  • Right to deletion of data concerning your person, insofar as one of the legal requirements applies and there is no legal exception to the contrary (Article 17 GDPR).

  • Right to restriction of processing, in particular if the accuracy of the personal data is contested, if the processing is unlawful and if the controller no longer needs the personal data for the purposes of processing (Article 18 GDPR).

  • Right to data portability. You have the right to receive all personal data concerning you in a structured, commonly used, and machine-readable format and have the right to transmit those data to another controller without hindrance from the controller to which the personal data have been provided (Article 20 GDPR).

  • Right of withdrawal: You have the right to withdraw your consent to the processing of your personal data at any time. The withdrawal of consent shall not affect the lawfulness of processing based on consent before its withdrawal (Article 7(3) GDPR).

  • Right to object: You also have the right to object, on grounds relating to your particular situation, to the processing of your data based on legitimate interests in accordance with the statutory provisions. If personal data is processed by us for direct marketing purposes, you have the right to object to this processing at any time without the need for special reasons (Art. 21 GDPR).

  • Right to lodge a complaint with a responsible supervisory authority (Article 77 GDPR).
